Regular day in a Storage Professionals Office Life
What are the daily tasks of a SAN professional – What are the routine jobs he is responsible for – What happens in a SAN industry engineers’ day in office.
Answer :
As with any software professional’s life the day starts with a brief review of going through the Mails – Since we are dependent on many other teams who are located in different time zones & geos we usually find nearly 50 to 150 new emails in our inbox when we start our day.
We go through all these mails – some of them are very much relevant to our day’s tasks like “Storage Product enhancement or development efforts ” , ” New fixes which will impact our earlier planning” , Lots of organisation wide mails saying who will be our new director or finance manager , Lots of Network or system or UPS outage mails , Lots of mails about the CR’s (Change request or Bugs) which we or one our teammate has logged and what are the latest updates regarding these bugs. The list of mails is endless so we better can have a separate posting for that.
Then based on our mails and our seniors(manager or lead) inputs and also based on our earlier days work we make our small “To Do ” list for the day which is some how planned with keeping in mind the “Dreaded Project Deadlines” ( End dates for us to finish the assigned tasks).
An example of our To Do list can be something like :
1. Go through the docs about the new features coming in the next release or version of the storage area network product.
2. Setup a test environment to reproduce the CR’s or bugs logged by customers. ( the end users of our storage products)
3. Verify the CR’s fixed by dev team ( we logged 10 bugs last week they fixed it 2 days back & delivered the new fix in our latest build of the product yesterday so we need to verify it today ) – We need to verify the fix & say that the fix has resolved the issue also called the product defect or NOT. If the bug is fixed (resolved) we close the CR saying the FIX is FINE(works) else we say the FIX has failed ( the bug still exists & the development team has not fixed it properly)
4. Write new test scripts to check the regressions filed by customers – We also do test development ( We develop and script or code the test cases or test scenarios – this involves lot of learning , implementation & improving )
5. Setup new 2 Terrabyte disk array & test how well is it working with latest Vista or latest Suse or RHEL linux.
the list grows along the day & some of them move for next day’s ToDo list.
Then we start the actuall work to accomplish what we have put in our ToDO list.
We may be working with new release of our SAN product and need to carry out sanity checks on the builds ,creating setups with different hardware and configurations and Operating Systems. We try to replicate customer network setups as far as possible but a customer like Citibank can have a huge SAN network costing billions of dollars what we can afford to replicate is no where comparable to that. We can say we setup a scaled down SAN network to work in our lab for all our work.

Each Company will follow a little different strategy for hiring a storage Proffessional still below information will give you a big advantage to prepare well for the actual interview.Storage is very vast technology area if you are appearing for a Storage Testing Professional’s interview, Inertviewer will try to assess your abilities in the following segments.
1) Domain
2) Platforms or Operating Systems
3) Development or Testing Skills
Domain: Interviewer tries to know which part of storage you are working with or had worked earlier .You might say SAN Product test engineer,Firmware driver Test Engineer or Protocols testing Engineer. They try to assess which is your core area of working if you are a SAN Product Test Engineer they may ask about the architecture of the product ,how do you install it, how do you test it.What is the Protocols supported and what all topologies it can manage.
If you are Firmware or Driver testing engineer you will asked in Firmware and Driver model , installation ,how you test firmware for stability and their compatibilty with different OS’es.If you are Testing Protocols they might want to ask how you setup the framework for testing the protocols ,which are the tools you are using .
2) Platforms or Operating Systems.
Here they try to know how many OS’s you have worked on and what extent you know them,in any company they expect you to know atlest more than 2 OS’es very well.
They might ask how you can install os’es with 3rd party drivers,how to use I/O and some configuration mangement tools.Also questions about where to find debug messeges is very frequent.
3)Core Skill :
If you were a SAN developer they might ask many questions relevant to your development aspects – questions on the programming languages, scripts, Your Configuration management etc
If you are a SAN Tester they might ask you questions on testing ,life cycles and defect tracking tools and automation tools if you know any.
I just wanted to share some of the positive things which helped shape my Career.
There was a time when I was working as a junior lab admin & was struggling to change Job. I wanted to shift job as my initial salary was less. I tried, tried with the minimal windows admin knowledge I had but I failed to get interview calls.I also failed to impress the few interviews I got since they expected someone with
more advanced knowledge.
So I started searching for a Technology which is hot in demand & gets more security for my Career.
Then I came across this video which I will share at the end of this email. This Video really changed the course of my Career. The Video was about Vmware Virtualization Technology. Its a video called VI3 demo (Vmware Infrastructure 3). The video had a guy explaining very fast some major features of Vmware enterprise virtualization product suite. He covered so many technical explanations about the product feature in so little time that I had to see it 3 to 4 times to understand the whole video.
I saw the video again & again 3 to 5 more times ( in total 10 times I saw this video ). Perfected the way he explained about Vmware features like Vmotion,HA,DRS,advantages of a Virtual Machine etc. Then I learned quite more about Vmware Virtualization with guidance of some of my friends who were working in the same technology. I mentioned about VMware Virtualization technology exposure & VI3 features awareness in my resume , updated my resume & posted on all major job portals.
The immediate next interview I got was focussed on VI3(Vmware Infrastructure) I was able to clear the initial telephonic round with a lot of tech stuff I learned in this video as well as some of the docs from Vmware company. The next rounds had some gap so I studied, practiced worked on lab which a friend had setup at his home with just 1 ESX host & software iSCSI storage. Then the day of the technical face to face interviews came & I was confident. Though I could not answer all 100% of the questions the interviewers asked I was able to answer almost 65% also considering my enthusiasm to get into Virtualization & me talking so fluently about how our company was thinking of implementing VI3 due to its obvious advantages I got my job offer.
Yes that video inspired me to take more action & did change the course of my Career. I got into Virtualization job & that changed my life a lot. They pay & benefits package was better than previous job, I also got more data center, hardware, storage, networking exposure than I had before. I also got some good hikes due to my performance. It was like a dream come true since the job was like recession proof considering the advantages of the VI3 technology.

I dont think the video is great its just that I personally took inspiration from the Video , more interest in Virtualization technology due to the video & put time, effort,followed up to get the job in Virtualization. Just seeing the video & taking no action will never get us anywhere.
So for the critics I would say this Video is nothing great but it did make a difference in my life.
Im glad I got involved in Virtualization & later Storage & Software Testing domains. They all were exciting as well as rewarding.
Now Im planning to do a Paid training on Vmware VI3 (Virtual Infrastructure 3). Since VI3 requires dedicated effort I just want the serious people.
